Retro Reread #7: The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks

This is one of the first epic fantasy books I read as a kid. It is clearly inspired by Tolkien and I don’t have a problem with that. Although I will say that it made me sad then and still makes me sad now that there weren’t really any women directly involved in the plot.

But that led me to seek out female fantasy writers who were writing female protagonists.

This book, like Lord of the Rings, does emphasize the bonds of brotherhood and friendship. Also, that internal battles are just as important as the external conflicts Shea faces.

I did enjoy rereading this one more than rereading First King of Shannara but I also admit that I didn’t enjoy rereading this as much as I did when I read it for the first time.

Next up: The Elfstones of Shannara!
